In 2007, Barbara Layne wrote on Angela Silver’s work: “Exploring the relationship between conventional language structures and corporeal experience, Silver questions the way in which texts function in society. Her work raises question about public and private spaces, and offers alternatives to the everyday processes of communication, translation and human exchange.” In Amanuensis, Silver uses typewriter keys attached to boxing/training gloves to force an imprint upon the gallery wall. Through this act, fragments of text from obsolete writing technology become contemporary tools for reviving marks of text that comprise language.

Angela Silver is an interdisciplinary artist based in Calgary. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally. Her performative work Blindwriting has been presented in New York and at Toronto’s Nuit Blanche in 2006. In 2009, she will perform at Fofa in Montreal. Currently, she is a J.W. McConnell Fellow and a SSHRC Joseph-Bombardier Canada Master’s Scholarship recipient at Concordia University in Montreal.
