M:ST Festival of performative art gets Calgarians Moving
This October, the Mountain Standard Time Festival will show Calgarians that performative art can be a great work out. From October 3rd to 17th, the fourth edition of this biennial festival will feature artistic projects that get the public walking, running, and exploring their city in new ways.
The fun will get off to a fast-paced start at 12:30pm on Thanksgiving Sunday (Oct 12th) at Glenbow Museum. Toronto artist duo The Movement Movement, (Jenn Goodwin and Jessica Rose), are inviting 200 members of the public to participate in a group run through the museum. Run Glenbow Museum is a unique opportunity to peruse rare art objects and release endorphins. Register online at themovementmovement.ca.
On October 14th and 15th, UK artist Duncan Speakman will lead the public through streets and alleys as part of the locative media performance sounds from above the ground. Speakman will use radio receivers to transmit and remix sounds from the urban environment to form a trail of audio clues. Register by contacting programming@emmedia.ca or 403.263.2833.
At 7pm on October 14th, Lethbridge-based artist Kelly Andres will launch the Urban Habitat Laboratory at 809 art space. The UHL is a mobile, sustainable living space and activist centre that Andres will use to teach sustainability workshops in various locations around Lethbridge and Calgary. Visit www.mstfestival.org for specific times and locations.
Last but not least, on October 17th Halifax-based artist Eryn Foster will lead a day-long pilgrimage from the Calgary Tower to the suburban neighborhood of Arbour Lake. New Canadian Pilgrimages: Mobile Mix Tape continues the artist's ongoing exploration of the Canadian landscape, this time enhanced with a custom mobile soundtrack. To join in on this exciting excursion or suggest a song, register in advance by contacting info@mstfestival.org.
These events are just a few of many examples of the dynamic and exciting performative art projects that will be featured in the M:ST 4 Festival. All M:ST 4 events are free and open to the general public. For more information about M:ST 4, visit mstfestival.org. Get your Legs on Calgary!
